In the U.S., the number of single mothers is increasing. U.S. Census Bureau reported that one third of all children in 2000 were raised by a single mother, with 80% of this number are single mothers.
While divorce accounts for the majority of children being raised by single parents, over 40% of all single mothers were not married.

The stigma generally attached to single mothers has been eroded in recent years. Celebrities, whose choices to become single mothers came forward highly, are largely responsible for this change in attitude of society towards single mothers. One view gaining ground is that instead of being seen as a failure for not to attract a man with a family that, many successful women are single parents from the heart, they know what they want and how to get it.

The scientific and medical advances in reproductive technology have given new options for women and more acceptable to get pregnant. Increasing the quality of semen donors and the most advanced techniques for the maintenance of donated sperm viable for long periods of time for women only a wide range of options and a greater level of comfort in the choice of artificial insemination . The artificial insemination technology has also advanced, increasing the likelihood of becoming pregnant.

Adoption is also becoming a viable alternative for women who want to be single mothers. Many adoption agencies have changed their policies to allow adoptions, single parents and single women can now be financially stable adoptive mothers.

Better conditions in the workplace are also giving more women the opportunity to be single mothers. Instead of blatant discrimination against single mothers that the practice of employers, many in the past, many employers offer child care on site. Special rooms are available at the workplace where nursing mothers can express milk, to share work programs and flexible work schedules are available at the base of mothers working outside the home.

Single mothers have their critics. There are sectors who believe that women who have deliberately chosen to be single parents are women who have not had time, opportunity or resources to attract a man to raise a family. There are many followers who believe that children of single mothers are disadvantaged. The erosion of traditional family is an important issue in these areas, who believe that children of single mothers have a higher incidence of births outside marriage and divorce under the influence of a single mother.

I do believe there has been a gradual erosion of the stigma applied to single moms, but there is still a long way to go, especially in the work place. Single mothers who miss a lot of work because of their children can place a real burden on co workers. In these times where the work force is lean and other workers have to pick up the work of the absent single mom, they often resent having extra work piled on when they already carry a heavy work load.
